Tutorial: How to Calculate Your ABV

Today I'm going to explore one of the Brew Master Tools, the ABV Calculator. ABV, or Alcohol by Volume, is an important characteristic of homebrewed beer, and all beer generally. It lets the brewer and drinker know whether it's sessionable beer or higher gravity, among other things. Let's get started.

After we launch the application we start on the Main Menu. You'll see the four current features: Brew Tools, Brew Sessions, BCJP Categories and Beer Reviews.

As you might imagine, the ABV Calculator is located under Brew Tools.

 

 

Once we select ABV Calculator, we can start to figure out what our ABV is.

 

Now, how do we get gravity? There are two preferred methods for homebrewers. It is typically done via a hydrometer or a refractometer. For those starting out, more than likely a hydrometer was included in your kit.

For my most recent Black IPA as an example, I had an original gravity of 1.078 and after six weeks it came back 1.022. 

You'll notice that for the input Brewmaster assumes the starting 1. So you just need to fill in the rest. Type in '078' for original and '022' for final.

Now click Calculate, and off we go. This one clocks in at 7.9% ABV. It will be a fun beer to sip. Cheers!

Updates ... 3 years later

Well, hello there gang.
It's certainly been a while since our first blog post and application upload. Would you accept the excuse that we've been busy?

In any case, the Brewmaster application has recently been updated, mostly on the back-end to be compliant with the new Android standards and rules. There are some interface navigation improvements as well, in my opinion.

The recipe manager you were promised is not part of that update. But, I can say that it is now the next feature which will be add. We just had to lay down a new foundation to support it, as I previously mentioned.

Hopefully you enjoy the new look and feel. Thanks for the patience thus far and new improvements will be there.

Hello Homebrewers!

We are excited to work on bringing top of the line Home Brewing software to your mobile devices. Currently available only in the Google Play shop, we will be adding an iPhone app in the second half of 2013.
